Under 30 and Not Being Taken Seriously in Business?

Does this hit home for you?

I started a real estate career when I was 20 years old. I worked hard, had an amazing mentor and kept up to date on all the new laws and policies. I spent 6 years fighting my way past the, "oh you must be the agent were meeting's assistant" or "so, how long have you been doing this for?" I was just as qualified as the 40+ year old who started their career at the same time but to most, I didn't "look" like I would know what I was doing. I had a lot to offer, but I would have needed another 5+ years to "look" like I actually did.

Don't judge a book by its cover.

Just because I was young didn't mean I wasn't capable of negotiating a great purchase deal, getting the best price for the sale of a home or guiding someone through the home buying process like a seasoned pro.

This goes back to my earlier blog post on the reality of technology today View Here that explains why millennials, and younger generations alike, are possibly even more qualified based on the fact they have a greater understanding of how things work in the digital world, thus allowing them to absorb information much faster than ever before with technology right at their fingertips.

There are so many young people getting dismissed, not for the real talents and abilities they have, but simply because people just refuse to take them seriously in business, because their age must directly translate to an obvious lack of experience and knowledge.

Yes, experience does trump a lot of factors and in the words of Harry Connick Jr. "the only way to gain 10 years of experience is, well, 10 years!" But knowledge is also power and the younger generation these days are like sponges when it comes to absorbing and interpreting information to jump ahead of the game.

So, next time you think, that guy can't be any good at that, he looks like he finished preschool! Give him a chance, you might just be pleasantly surprised.
